Tweedsmuir Block Party!

(Brian here)

Our family photo :)
This past weekend marked the end of summer block party for our street. Our neighbors of all ages and sizes came together for a potluck style party. Since there is such a plethora of kids on our street (ahh, the suburbs!) everyone brought extra toy cars, tricycles and Legos for everyone else to play with. Shelley wore Declan and for the most part, they hung out with some of the other younger parents and enjoyed some of the eats. Lincoln and I played. And for the most part, I watched Lincoln play with other kids.
We all know that Lincoln can be pretty social at times. He blew us away this weekend! For close to 2 hours, Lincoln played with a first and third grader. They “played” corn hole, threw the bean bags, rode tricycles, built Legos and even tried hammering some nails. The crazy thing is that it wasn’t just Lincoln having fun with the older kids. It was a mutual fun. Sometimes the older kids had fun ideas and Lincoln followed and sometimes Lincoln had fun ideas and the other kids followed. Everyone was laughing and it was really fun and amazing to watch! When it was time to go home, both kids asked where Lincoln lived and said they would see him to play the next day. Needless to say, they wore Lincoln out!
Declan equally amazed and impressed with his social skills at the table. He was his typical super-smiley, no cares in the world, self. People kept sitting down at the table and commenting about Declan. Declan too enjoyed some good food: mac and cheese, and even some of Shelley’s hamburger. Declan also impressed with his ability to follow directions. Shelley asked Declan to clap his hands, not expecting him to know what she meant or connect the words to the action, but he clapped and clapped and then smiled a huge proud smile. Even the 14-month olds parents were impressed!

It was a nice way to end the summer and spend some time getting to know our neighbors more. We’re hoping that by this time next year, we’ll own a house and have a new place to call home. If our new street does not do something like this, it is definitely something I see myself organizing.
